Methods of Production-Case Study Assessment Franks House's
Having worked for many years in the building industry Frank set up his own business when
he was in his early 30's. He developed a range of skills and contacts and had built up some
savings. He put together a business plan and borrowed money from the bank to set up a
housing repair and house building company.
At first, he mainly did repairs. each job was different and often brought its own challenges.
Particularly with older houses he would start repairing one thing only to find something else
broke and he had to fix that as well. Then in 2014 Frank found some land and built his first
house. It was designed specifically to the orders o his client who wanted a retirement home
and has very firm ideas of what they liked. Frank made quite a lot of money from this deal
and for the next couple of houses he built to order.
This meant the business remained relatively small because each one took time to design and
build but his business was relatively successful. However now Frank wanted to take a big
step forward. He had been hearing about a business in Germany that built houses in a
factory. The various parts of the house where then transported to the location and
assembled. This new type of process meant the parts of the houses could be built indoors.
This made life a lot easier than building a house outdoors when bad weather often stopped
construction. When the parts where brought to the site a large number of similar houses
could be assembled very quickly in one location. Frank liked the sound of this and has found
some fields where he could build 30 or so houses. He would call this Maryfield after hismum
