It is common during certain holiday seasons, such as Halloween and Christmas, to see small stores utilize unoccupied space within shopping centers to sell holiday merchandise temporarily, while demand is high. Due to the seasonality of these products, the business cannot sustain the high cost to operate the store throughout the year, so they opt for the following store format:

Management discovers that a supervisor at one of its restaurant locations removes excess cash and resets sales totals throughout the day on the point-of-sale (pos) system. at closing, the supervisor deposits cash equal to the recorded sales on the pos system and keeps the rest. the supervisor forwards the close-of-day pos reports from the pos system along with a copy of the bank deposit slip to the company’s revenue accounting department. the revenue accounting department records the sales and the cash for the location in the general ledger and verifies the deposit slip to the bank statement. any differences between sales and deposits are recorded in an over/short account and, if necessary, followed up with the location supervisor. the customer food order checks are serially numbered, and it is the supervisor’s responsibility to see that they are accounted for at the end of each day. customerchecks and the transaction journal tapes from the pos system are kept by the supervisor for 1 week at the location and then destroyed. what control allowed the fraud to occur?

How should the environmental effects be dealt with when evaluating this project? the environmental effects should be ignored since the plant is legal without mitigation. the environmental effects should be treated as a sunk cost and therefore ignored. if the utility mitigates for the environmental effects, the project is not acceptable. however, before the company chooses to do the project without mitigation, it needs to make sure that any costs of "ill will" for not mitigating for the environmental effects have been considered in the original analysis. the environmental effects should be treated as a remote possibility and should only be considered at the time in which they actually occur. the environmental effects if not mitigated would result in additional cash flows. therefore, since the plant is legal without mitigation, there are no benefits to performing a "no mitigation" analysis.
