Gas Exploration: A local natural gas exploration company drills for shale gas in the Appalachian Basin of Western Pennsylvania. Shallow wells of about 4000 feet are fairly inexpensive to drill, and relatively low risk. With the high price of natural gas, there is an interest in going after deeper deposits at about 15,000 feet. Not only does this cost much more, but the actual cost is uncertain because of unknown geological conditions that may be encountered. The cost of a deep well is "equally likely" to be $8,$9,$10,$11,or $12,(all in millions). Note: What do we mean by "equally likely" when we have five possible outcomes? Prob(cost=$8mil) = ...Prob(cost=$12mil) = 0.20.The revenue is also unknown with a payout as follows:$100,000,000 with a probability of .10,$10,000,000 with a probability of .30,$0 (a dry hole) with a probability of .60.Simulation: RNs: .32, .37, .98, .01, .76 Trial 1: Simulate (i) Cost (ii) Revenue, and compute profit.

You are thinking of making your mansion more energy efficient by replacing some of the light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, and insulating part or all of your exterior walls. each compact fluorescent light bulb costs $4 and saves you an average of $2 per year in energy costs, and each square foot of wall insulation costs $1 and saves you an average of $0.20 per year in energy costs.† your mansion has 150 light fittings and 3000 sq ft of uninsulated exterior wall. to impress your friends, you would like to spend as much as possible, but save no more than $750 per year in energy costs (you are proud of your large utility bills). how many compact fluorescent light bulbs and how many square feet of insulation should you purchase? how much will you save in energy costs per year? (if an answer does not exist, enter dne.)
