The retreat (scenario)
the first-line managers of elh inc. were sent on a retreat to silver falls for their inaugural strategic planning meeting. few people knew each other, but their task was clear: design a new performance appraisal system for subordinates that would be effective and usable.
the first day little was accomplished except for the jockeying to see who would be the official leader. finally, jim seemed to wrangle control and provide the first real direction for the group.
by the second day, the group seemed to begin working well. they spent the morning determining group standards with respect to how they would make decisions within the group and how to manage the idea-generation process.
on the third and fourth days, the managers got down to work and moved amazingly quickly, with ideas flowing freely. by the end of the fourth day, they had a workable system developed, and they felt satisfied. that night they all signed off on a new document to be presented to the regional manager the next day. they all felt a twinge of regret at having to break up the group and return to normal work life.
when the management team left silver falls to return to their own teams and departments, they had just completed the stage of group development.

The gilbert instrument corporation is considering replacing the wood steamer it currently uses to shape guitar sides. the steamer has 6 years of remaining life. if kept, the steamer will have depreciaiton expenses of $650 for five years and $325 for the sixthyear. its current book value is $3,575, and it can be sold on an internet auction site for$4,150 at this time. if the old steamer is not replaced, it can be sold for $800 at the endof its useful life. gilbert is considering purchasing the side steamer 3000, a higher-end steamer, whichcosts $12,000 and has an estimated useful life of 6 years with an estimated salvage value of$1,500. this steamer falls into the macrs 5-year class, so the applicable depreciationrates are 20.00%, 32.00%, 19.20%, 11.52%, 11.52%, and 5.76%. the new steamer is fasterand allows for an output expansion, so sales would rise by $2,000 per year; the newmachine's much greater efficiency would reduce operating expenses by $1,900 per year. to support the greater sales, the new machine would require that inventories increase by$2,900, but accounts payable would simultaneously increase by $700. gilbert's marginalfederal-plus-state tax rate is 40%, and its wacc is 15%.a. should it replace the old steamer? b. npv of replace = $2,083.51

There is just one person in our group, silvia, who seems to have radically different ideas about how to complete our project. she seems to purposely disagree with the majority opinions of the rest of us though yesterday she said something that made a lot of sense to us solve our production problem. i suggested to the entire group today that we hear silvia’s suggestions and asked silvia to share in-depth more of what she said yesterday. i am using which adaptive leader behavior?
