Because of the process of osmosis, since there is more solute in the animal cell than its surroundings, the water would have to flow in to dilute the solute in the animal cell. However, too much water flowing into the cell is dangerous since the cell membrane cannot expand quickly enough to accommodate the water. therefore the animal cell will swell up and even burst under the pressure.
