One of the methods is to degrade/destroy the neurotransmitter chemically so it will not be able to bind to the receptor again. The example would be acetylcholine esterase which will degrade acetylcholine

(2) reuptake, in which the neurotransmitter is reabsorbed by a neurotransmitter transport protein in the membrane of the presynaptic neuron. These neurotransmitters are "recycled" by the presynaptic neuron once packaged into another synaptic vesicle for reuse.

Another method to eliminate the neurotransmitter is by reuptake. This method involves and active transport which done by the protein in the membrane of the presynaptic neuron. The neurotransmitter in the cleft is taken back so it could be reused later.
One of the transmitters that use this method is serotonin. Depression drug will inhibit the reuptake so there is more serotonin released in the brain.
