The process involves hydrolysis of ATP to provide necessary energy. The process is responsible for maintaining the large excess of Na+ ions outside the cell and the large excess of K+ ions inside the cell. Therefore, failure of the sodium potassium pump can result to damage of the cell, cause swelling and rapturing of the cell as well this is due to unbalanced cellular charge across the membrane.
