the endosymbiotic theory says that mitochondria and plastids, like the chloroplast, originated from small prokaryotic organisms that started to live inside other larger organisms, in a symbiotic relationship.

In this type of relationship,

A eukaryotic organism is believed to comprise an autotrophic prokaryotic particle. From then on, they started a cooperative relationship, and one organism began to live inside the other (endosymbiosis). Over time, this relationship became so important that organisms could no longer live in isolation.

The autotrophic prokaryote organism probably benefited the host cell by ensuring processes such as cellular respiration, in the case of mitochondria, and photosynthesis, in the case of chloroplasts. The host cell, on the other hand, guaranteed protection and nutrients to the new cell organelles.

In short, one organism lives inside another, and one organism could no longer live without another.
