A heterozygous diploid fungal strain undergoes meiosis to produce its haploid spores. The spores have a cell coat that is determined by a single gene Sc, with spores that have the Sc allele being green and the spores with the sc allele being colorless. The color of the spore supposedly has no effect on the viability of the spore or its development and production during meiosis. A random sample of 501 spores is collected from a plate of a sporulating heterozygous (Sc/sc) diploid mycelium, and 235 are colorless. Your goal is to test whether the supposition that spore color has no effect on meiotic spore production is supported or not. Explain in words and numbers what is an appropriate biological null hypothesis. Use the chi-square test to make your statistical determination about this sample.
