Look at this map of current volcano hazards. Click a few volcanoes to determine their warning levels. Why is it possible to have a warning system for volcanoes? If you were a volcanologist, would you watch certain volcanoes on the map more than others? ANSWER: It is possible to predict a volcanic eruption by studying the rate of change in gases released, change in seismic activity, change in ground deformation, and so on. These are telltale signs before an eruption. Looking at the map, volcanologists should focus on Kilauea and Shishaldin, as these two volcanoes are at the watch alert level and are at a heightened risk of eruption.
