An issue that has entered the mainstream media in a lot of countries is Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO). A lot of food that we eat today contains genetically modified ingredients and usually without our knowledge. GMOs may be modified or changed genetically to produce more food, be less susceptible to bugs and drought or to stay fresh longer for transport. Supporters of this technology maintain that it ensures and sustains food security around the world as the population increases. There are, however, some concerns about GMOs and their safety both to humans and the environment. Some of these concerns include the reduction of genetic diversity of crops making them more vulnerable to disease and pests. Additionally, although farmers have been selectively breeding crops for thousands of years, actual modification of the plant genome itself is a relatively new technology and some are worried about the affects it may have on those who eat GMOs. As a consumer, are you concerned about eating GMO foods? Do you think the benefits outweigh the risks that may be associated with GMOs? Defend your position.
