So if you are guarding a castle and an army of 2000 men is about to attack, would you say if your the only defender that you could survive and scare them off? if there are 3000 defenders you have a much less likely chance of dying. This is why there are herds, flocks, and such because each individual has a less likely chance of dying. the more organisms the more safe.

But I have no idea why cicadas come out every 17 years so please don't get mad.
