The three types of fungus-like protists include water molds, slime molds, and mushrooms. Fungus-like protists use a pseudopod, meaning "false mouth," to digest food. Water molds and slime molds resemble thin threads or hairs. Many slime molds are bright yellow and orange in color. You can find downy mildews on vascular plants, and they are considered helpers. Note that slime molds caused Ireland's 1845-1846 famine by attacking the potato crops. Ireland's famine forced many people to immigrate to the United States and Canada.
