The Value of Resources This activity will help you meet this educational goal: You will evaluate the costs associated with the use of an energy resource and take a tentative position regarding a policy issue. Directions Read the instructions for this self-checked activity. Type in your response to each question, and check your answers. At the end of the activity, write a brief evaluation of your work. Activity In this activity, you’ll consider one of Earth’s resources that we have not yet investigated in this lesson .
Choose a natural resource from this list. Note that although the resources listed are in Texas, you may generalize your argument to apply to your local region or beyond. Once you have selected a natural resource, you’ll identify ways in which it is affected by the use or extraction of energy sources. You will then take a position regarding what, if anything, should be done to preserve your chosen natural resource.
Part A Describe the natural resource you selected. In what way can it be considered valuable to humans?

Part B Now choose one of the resources used for energy production that you have studied in this lesson. Describe how the way humans use or obtain this resource might impact the natural resource you described in part A. If you don’t think the natural resource in part A is affected, explain why

Part C What do you think should be done to preserve the natural resource you selected in part A if humans continue to produce energy with the resource you selected in part B? Is there a technological way to preserve it? Or would a government policy have the greatest effect? Explain your reasoning.

Self-Evaluation How did you do? Rate your work on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 as the highest score. Then write a brief evaluation of your work below. Note what you learned and what challenged you.
