Warnings for heating water with a burner versus warnings for a hot plate are similar in many respects, except for a few differences. However, there are more warnings for using a hot plate.

1. The danger of a hot plate cracking is more likely than when water is heated with a burner.

2. Do not heat metallic objects on a hot plate. At the high temperatures, the surface of the hot plate could become damaged and could become a shock risk.

3. Use tongs or rubber coated gripping devices to remove objects from a hot plate.

4. Do not store flammable or volatile objects near a hot plate to avoid the danger of fire.

5. On older hot plates, check for cracks, the integrity of the thermostat, and corrosion.

For heating water, it is necessary to
1. Use medium rather than high settings for heating water.

2. Make sure that the glass or hardware is heat resistant.

3. Make sure that the vessel is not left unattended to the point where the water evaporates and leaves the heater without water because it would crack.

4. Exercise caution when pouring hot water from the flask or container.
