In an experimental procedure, the response of the phenomenon that is measured by the investigator is called the dependent variable. And the variable that is being manipulated in order to get the response is called the independent variable. So, basically, the independent variable is being manipulated and changed to effect the dependent variable and see its effect on it. There are also other variables that could affect the dependent variables that are being held the same all throughout the procedure which are called the constants in order to minimize errors. And to control the experiment. So, in an experiment we have an independent variable, dependent variable and the constants.
