dna fingerprinting is a laboratory technique used to establish a link between biological evidence and a suspect in a criminal investigation. a dna sample taken from a crime scene is compared with a dna sample from a suspect. most recently dna fingerprinting has been used by the project innocence to support the claims of those incarcerated that they are, in fact, innocent. five years ago, several female students at a college dorm were murdered. there was limited forensic evidence, but witnesses said they saw a male student, ronnie, in the area of the murders. eventually, he was convicted and sent to prison for life. ronnie maintained his innocence.
project innocence heard ronnie's plea. they reviewed all of the evidence and found some blood samples found at the scene of one of the murders: blood spatter on the victim and an adjacent birdbath. police had assumed the blood was that of the victim but it could also have been the murder's blood. project innocence requested blood samples from the roommates of the murdered students. above are the dna fingerprints of ronnie and his female classmates. based on the blood evidence, could someone else be the murderer?
a) no. ronnie's dna matches the blood spatter on the birdbath.
b) yes. karen's dna is a match to the blood spatter on the birdbath.
c) yes. aubrey's dna is a match to the blood spatter on the birdbath.
