Fats are the lipids and serve as a stored form of energy. The body can use carbohydrates, fats or proteins as an energy source. Both carbohydrates and proteins provide 4 kilocalories per gram of the food when oxidized by the process of cellular respiration. On the other hand, one gram of fats provides 9 kilocalories of energy upon oxidation.  

Therefore, when a person performs an activity that requires plenty of energy supply, the food rich in fats should be consumed to meet the increased demand for energy.
