Explain how solid garbage in landfills can result in air pollution.

Landfills refer to the locations destined for dumping garbage, rubbish, or other kinds of solid wastes. They are the most general means of disposing of solid waste that is either left to pile in heaps or are buried. One of the most drastic effects of landfills is air pollution and its negative influences on the atmosphere.  

There are more than ten toxic gases discharged from the landfills, of which methane is the most harmful gas. The methane gas is generated during the procedure of organic matter decay, it has the tendency to trap solar radiation twenty times more efficiently in comparison to carbon dioxide.  

The consequence is enhanced global and urban temperatures. Apart from methane gas, other agricultural and household chemicals, like ammonia and bleach can produce toxic gases, which can majorly influence the quality of air within the locality of the landfill.  

Particulate matter, dust, and other non-chemical contaminate can also be expelled into the atmosphere, thus, further donating to air quality complications.

Most of the waste in a land fill is biodegradable which releases methane gas in the air while degrading.

Methane gas is a green house gas which is able to entrap the heat radiated back by the earth. Entrapping of heat energy causes rising of global earth temperature thereby causing global warming.

Methane is much dangerous than carbon dioxide as it entraps twenty time more heat radiated by earth.

Hence , in this way  solid garbage in landfills can result in air pollution.
