Hydrochloric acid or HCl is a corrosive liquid. It is one of the chemicals which is released in human stomach.
It has following functions inside the stomach:
1. It kills the microbes present inside the stomach as well as present inside the undigested food.
2. It aids in the digestion process by activating the enzymes. It converts the enzyme pepsinogen into pepsin. The enzyme pepsin has a role in breaking the peptide bonds in the proteins present in the food. Thus helps in digestion.
Hydrochloric acid has following digestive functions:
i) Hydrochloric acid causes activation of the enzyme pepsin.
ii) Hydrochloric acid also cause breakdown of connective tissue in meat.
iii) Hydrochloric acid causes destruction of some ingested microorganisms.
