Progesterone hormone is mainly released by ovary. It is specifically released by corpus luteum. Corpus luteum is a dead follicle, formed after ovulation in the second half of the menstrual cycle.  

Progesterone stimulates the growth of the endometrium, which is a lining of the uterus. Thickening of endometrium lining allows the implantation of the fertilized egg, which results in pregnancy. It is maintained high throughout pregnancy.

Thus, it prepares the body for maintaining pregnancy.
