Darwin's Theory of Evolution
Charles Darwin focused on three patterns of diversity during his
time observing nature on his voyage. In the time since his voyage,
other species of penguins have been documented, and their
evolutionary relationships with other birds have been discovered
Read each sentence about patterns of diversity. Drag each
sentence into the correct box
When Charles Darwin made his historic 5-year voyage of
scientific discovery on the Beagle, he visited many different
areas of the world and encountered several species of
penguins. In the Falkland Islands, he observed Magellanic
penguins, and in the Galápagos Islands, he studied the only
tropical penguin, Spheniscus mendiculus, adapted to life in
these islands that straddled the equator. Penguins are
unique among birds. Although they can no longer fly, their
wings have evolved to make them exceptional swimmers,
allowing them to take advantage of food sources in the
ocean. There are at least 17 (and possibly more) species of
penguins that inhabit areas of the world, such as Antarctica
and the Galápagos Islands, that are surrounded by oceans.
Modern scientists who study penguins have found evidence
that supports Darwin's theory of natural selection,
