6 As part of your new job as a research technician, you helped collect data on the population
response of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) to grazing. A pilot study was conducted in
the Curlew Valley of southeastern Idaho. Mark-recapture was used to estimate the abundance
of deer mice in 9 small isolated fields (3 with no grazing, 3 with moderate grazing, and 3 with
high-intensity grazing). A trapping grid consisting of 70 live traps, spaced 15 m apart, and
covering 0.81 ha was established in each field. Trapping was conducted for 10 consecutive
nights (per field).
As part of the preliminary data analysis, your boss has asked you to analyze data from one
field. You were instructed to use the Linclon-Peterson index to determine a population
estimate from one of the control samples. The first night 14 deer mice were trapped, tagged,
and released. The next night another 11 mice were captured and 4 of them were tagged.
Determine your population estimate for this control plot. Be sure to show your setup and
work. (Non-anonymous question o)

Joe is breeding cockroaches in his dorm room. he finds that the average wing length in his population of cockroaches is 4 cm. he chooses the six cockroaches that have the largest wings; the average wing length among these selected cockroaches is 10 cm. joe interbreeds these selected cockroaches. from earlier studies, he knows that the narrow-sense heritability for wing length in his population of cockroaches is 0.6. a. calculate the selection differential and expected response to selection for wing length in these cockroaches. b. what should be the average wing length of the progeny of the selected cockroaches?
