Imagine this scenario. During the spring and summer the old growth forest has been plagued with wildfires. The ground Litter as well as the
leaves on the trees have been burned. Only very young trees are
destroyed in the fire though; the old growth trees still stand. How
would this impact the beetle population, if at all
Since the leaf litter and small trees burned, we would
expect a decline in the brown beetle population
The wildfires destroyed all food sources for the
B) beetles: we would expect to see a decline in both
green and brown beetles.
Due to the wildfires, the entire beetle population
would decline because they would no longer be
camouflaged from predators.
The leaves are be destroyed and the green beetle
D) population would decline because they would no
longer be camouflaged from predators.

Female luna moths (actias luna) attract males by emitting chemical signals that spread through the air. a male hundreds of meters away can detect these molecules and fly toward their source. the sensory organs responsible for this behavior are the comblike antennae visible in the photograph shown here. each filament of an antenna is equipped with thousands of receptor cells that detect the sex attractant. based on what you learned in this chapter, propose a hypothesis to account for the ability of the male moth to detect a specific molecule in the presence of many other molecules in the air. what predictions does your hypothesis make? design an experiment to test one of these predictions.
