Phagocytosis of bacteria is a normal function of macrophages. They patrol the tissues of the body and ingest and destroy unwanted microbes. Some pathogens, however, have acquired the ability to survive and replicate within macrophages after they have been phagocytosed.

Tuberculosis, a serious lung infection that is widespread in some urban populations, is caused by one such pathogen, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This bacterium is usually acquired by inhalation into the lungs, where it is phagocytosed by alveolar macrophages. An unusual feature of M. tuberculosis is its ability to survive for decades within macrophages contained in such lesions.
