The recognition of specific DNA sequences by proteins is thought to depend on two types of mechanisms: one that involves the formation of hydrogen bonds with specific bases, primarily in the major groove, and one involving sequence-dependent deformations of the DNA helix. By comprehensively analyzing the three-dimensional structures of protein-DNA complexes, we show that the binding of arginines to narrow minor grooves is a widely used mode for protein-DNA recognition. This readout mechanism exploits the phenomenon that narrow minor grooves strongly enhance the negative electrostatic potential of the DNA. The nucleosome core particle offers a striking example of this effect. Minor groove narrowing is often associated with the presence of A-tracts, AT-rich sequences that exclude the flexible TpA step. These findings suggest that the ability to detect local variations in DNA shape and electrostatic potential is a general mechanism that enables proteins to use information in the minor groove, which otherwise offers few opportunities for the formation of base-specific hydrogen bonds, to achieve DNA binding specificity 1. What three properties of the major groove are advantageous to alpha helix insertion?
2. Which nucleotides are prevalent in narrow minor grooves?
3. Which amino acid tends to bind to the minor groove and how are minor groove width and electrostatic potential correlated?

4.06 hc)a five-year review of threats to the southern resident orca population of the united states concluded that the top threats were prey availability, contaminants, and effects from recreational and whale watching vessels. further down the list are oil spills, disease, and effects from commercial vessels not targeting whales. how might this list be different if it were for transient whale populations, which have a larger average population size and live farther offshore in open waters? a)the transient population is more likely to be affected by contaminants. b)the transient population is less likely to be affected by whale watching vessels. c)the transient population is more likely to be affected by disease. d)the transient population is less likely to be affected by prey availability.

What evidence could be used to convince policy makers to change a shipping lane from going through a whale breeding ground? information on the number of all whale species currently alive information on the number of all whales hit by boats in the given area information on the number of whale deaths in the world's oceans information on the number of whale offspring born every year. (a) scientists could collect and combine data on fish populations all around the world to show that their populations are declining. (b) scientists collect and combine data on fish populations all around the world to show that their populations are increasing. (c) scientists work together and use past data to show that fish populations are becoming locally extinct in some areas. (d) scientists work together and use past data to show that some fish populations are adapting to environmental changes.
