Protecting Yourself from Overexposure to the Sun Do you like to spend time in the sun? Many health risks are associated with overexposure to the sun. Research has shown that over time, exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays can harm your skin and cause skin cancer.

Some tips for having fun in the sun while staying safe:
Stay out of the sun between 10 am and 4 pm, when the sun's rays are the strongest. Use a sunscreen lotion that will protect you from ultraviolet light rays. It is best if you use a lotion that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. In addition, if you plan to swim, be sure to choose a waterproof brand. Apply sunscreen lotion every 2-3 hours (or even more if you are swimming).

Signs of skin cancer:
If you frequently are exposed to the sun, check your skin often for signs of cancer. Watch for changes in birthmarks and moles. See a physician if you notice any significant changes. If you have a sore that does not fully heal, you should also see a physician.

Protecting your pet:
Your cat or dog may also be prone to sunburn. You can protect your pet from sunburn by applying a sunscreen lotion with an SPF of at least 15 to the top of its nose and face as well as the pet's inner and outer ear tips. Avoid lotions with PABA or zinc oxide. These can be bad for your pet if it licks the lotion off. Check your pet store or health food store for appropriate sun protection products.
