1. During the program Ric O’Barry says, ‘I spent ten years building that industry up [i. e.capturing and training dolphins], and I spent the last thirty-five years trying to tear it down’. Explain the steps, the experiences and the processes in thinking and feeling that Ric O’Barry went through to move from one state of awareness and activity to virtually the opposite. Was it an overnight revelation, or a slow process of discovery and enlightenment?

2. How were the people of Taiji/Japan portrayed in the movie? Give specific parts of the film that made you think this.

3.Americans hunt deer for meat. The Japanese revere deer and do not hunt them for meat. How is the hunting of dolphins different from hunting deer? Explain your viewpoint.

4. During the film Hardy Jones, the founder of BlueVoice, claims that the fishermen of Taiji told him, when questioned about the income they derive from the annual dolphin drive, ‘It’s not about money, it’s about pest control’. Assuming his statement and the translation of the fishermen’s comments from Japanese into English is correct, discuss the way in which the killing of dolphins might be regarded as ‘pest control’. Describe and explain your own reaction to the comment.

5. When the makers of asked Japanese citizens on the street if they were aware of the dolphin slaughter, the people were shocked and didn’t seem to know. Do you think that all the people in Japan don’t know?

6. Footage of Australian actor Isabel Lucas and American actor Hayden Panettiere is included in . Discuss their role or purpose in the film. Does the fact that they are film and television actors, and not qualified environmentalists, add to, detract or even distract from the issues being raised?

7. Radical activism is defined as policy or action of using vigorous and at times extreme campaigning to bring about political or social change. Radical activists tend to do illegal things to further their cause, like lying, spying, destroying property, smuggling, and having a disregard for general laws or policies. Discuss the various sequences during that present behavior and actions by committed environmentalists that might be considered unethical or even criminal in some instances. Is the behavior justified in certain circumstances, or perhaps never justified?

8. Do you think it is ethical for Japan to sell dolphin meat to the general public and put in school lunches, knowing it can cause mercury poisoning? What action do you think should be taken in this regard?

9. What are some instances of bias in the movie? Did you think their bias furthered Ric O'Barry's message?
