I think the phrase means that despite the violence that is happening a person has a choice to forgive and move on or take revenge on the people who have caused you pain. Elie Wiesel had shown in the book "Night" that he had shortcomings and hurts against his God but Elie had never thought of plotting revenge against the people who have hurt him and his family. Elie held in his belief and the end, he  was saved.

One opinion: this can be compared to hamlets “to be or not to be” at this moment Elie Wiesel is questioning whether or not he should end all his suffering or live tru and survive it all
