Not long after the discovery of the shape of DNA by Watson, Crick, and Franklin in 1953, it quickly became
apparent that the double helix shape of DNA made it impossible for it to leave the protective nucleus. Since
DNA could not be found outside of the nucleus it led scientists to search for a different substance that could
assist in the synthesis of proteins in the cytoplasm. In 1961, Sydney Brenner, Francois Jacob, Mathew
Meselson, and Francis Crick devised an experiment that proved there was an intermediary, which they called X,
that transported information from the nucleus to the ribosomes. What was this molecule they temporary called
X?
A. mRNA
B. ATP
C. genes
D. Adenine
