Viajar al planeta Marte es un tema muy complicado. La misión que lleve a colonizarlo, si es que ocurre, ha de ver antes un proceso de adecuación, conocido normalmente como “terraformación”

La terraformación de Marte es un proceso hipotético con el cual el clima, la superficie y las cualidades conocidas del planeta Marte podrían ser deliberadamente acondicionadas con el objetivo de hacerlo habitable por seres humanos y otro tipo de vida terrestre.

Para lo anterior, actualmente existen varios proyectos que están definiendo cómo “construir”, mediante biotecnología, un organismo sintético, modificado genéticamente a partir de uno natural, capaz de producir cierta sustancia, como sería el oxígeno, a partir de otras más abundantes del entorno. O para ayudar a otro organismo a aprovechar mejor los recursos existentes y escasos.

Con esto, por ejemplo, se puede ayudar a las plantas a fijar nitrógeno más fácilmente, facilitando la fertilización, o a obtener agua donde prácticamente no la hay. O capturar aún mejor el dióxido de carbón. La dificultad radica en diseñar un organismo modificado genéticamente para terraformar y que luego se autodestruya para no estropear el balance ecológico que se genere en el planeta.
