QUESTIONS COMING SOON PLZ ANSWER IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW THE QUESTIONS! i will give them to u in comments You have studied about trees that bear seeds inside fruit. Other trees bear seeds but not inside fruit. These trees have no flowers. Instead, seeds are made inside their cones. Perhaps you have seen redwood, pine, cedar, or spruce trees. You may have collected cones from these trees.

VOCABULARY

Structure. Cone bearing plants produce two types of cones on the same plant--male cones and female cones. The small male cones grow near the top of the plant. Sperm is formed in these cones. Female cones are located lower on the tree. The female cones are larger than the male cones. Eggs are formed in the female cones.

Both male and female cones are made with scales connected to a central part. These scales are soft at the time the cone is growing. They become quite hard on the female cone after fertilization takes place.

Under each scale of the male cone, two pollen sacs are located. Two parts containing the egg cells can be found on the upper side of the female cone.

Function. Cones grow during the adult stage of life. This is similar to the stage when flowering plants grow flowers. When the cones are mature, pollen grains drop from the male cones. These grains usually land on female cones of the same tree. Wind can carry some of the pollen to other trees, too. A very small portion of the pollen actually gets to the female cones. The remaining amount gets lost in the air. Since the pollen must travel some distance through the air, much more is produced than is needed for fertilization.

A sticky fluid holds the pollen on the female cone. Then, the female cone opens to allow male sperm cells to get inside it. The sperm cells grow tubes that lead to the egg cells. The sperm cell slowly follows the tube to the eggs, and fertilization takes place. New lives have begun. Seeds start developing.

Seeds. Through the process of mitosis, the seeds grow. Food from the female cone helps the embryo form. It may look like a tiny plant. Many seeds are developed inside each female cone. During the warm part of the year, the female cone opens. The seeds drop to the ground and begin to grow. This process of reproduction and seed development could last as long as two years.

The cone is not considered a fruit. It does not grow from a flower like a fruit does. However, it functions as fruit in many ways.
