Why are the leaves of desert plants reduced into thorns

The leaves of the desert plants are reduced to spines/thorns to help to prevent the loss of water by transpiration. Since in deserts, there is a scarcity of water, if the plants lose more water, they will not survive. Hence to prevent this such adaptations have been developed.
