Pictured above thousands of high school students in Seoul, Korea-flanked by giant video screens-meet some of the
instructors from Megastudy, the biggest of South Korea's 28,000 cram schools, that offers videotaped online courses
from English grammar to physics. The best cram schools charge over $1,000 a month per subject in a country where the
average annual income is only $16,000. Why do the parents spend about half of their income on these after-school
courses, especially when students already spend up to 18 hours a day studying? "Koreans will endure just about any
hardship...[because] a degree from a leading school isn't just the key to a good job-it's a prerequisite for finding the right
spouse and establishing high-powered connections that can last a lifetime" (Ihlwan, 2006:46).
Respond to the forum by discussing are there similar programs in the United States?
What aspects of the schools do you think would make the U. S. public school system better? What is not a good idea about
cram schools?
