Most materials we encounter consist of more than one Element or compound, so they are mixtures. A mixture is made of two or more substances that are together in the same place, but their atoms are not chemically combined.

1. Suppose you are a researcher studying the components of sand and seawater. You need to separate the shell fragments from the sand, and you must also extract the salt from the seawater.
