A waste characterization study, or MSW analysis report, is the cornerstone of MSW stream analysis. The study summarizes the methodology and results of the study for lay people (people without professional or specialized knowledge in a particular subject) using scientific and engineering vocabulary and graphs. The 2019 Waste Characterization Study for Wake County, NC is provided online (see Google Classroom) for use in this exercise. The organization of the study is very similar to a lab report (remember the infamous body proportions lab report). Section 1 of the study introduces the reader to the objectives of the study and the background information regarding the study location and other important factors to consider. Section 2 of the study introduces the procedures, timing, and other factors that help the reader understand how the study was conducted (what, where, when, how). Section 3 of the study organizes the results of the study using tables and graphs along with written statements. Section 4 explains the significance of the study, its findings, and recommendations for next steps for the management of solid waste. 1. What is the purpose of this study? 2. Where did the sampling for this study take place, specifically (an address or location name)? 3. In five sentences, summarize the sampling and sorting procedures.
