Many hotspots are islands: think Galapagos Islands. We know that over the years a variety of
endemic species have evolved and adapted to natural environmental changes. Endemics, by
definition, are highly adapted to their home range. As conditions within their range change,
their adaptations can function as a source of competitive strength or weakness. Under what
condition would we expect to see adaptations function as a source of weakness and
contribute to the endangered or extinct status of endemic species?
A) when rapid, anthropogenic changes take place
B) when abiotic conditions slowly change over time
C) when competition for food between species increases
D) when carrying capacity is reduced by a natural disaster
