Consider the diagram of reproduction of yeast cells. Yeast can reproduce both asexually and sexually. During sexual reproduction, alpha or a cells produce âa-factorâ, which signals the presence of an a cell to neighbouring α cells and the a cells also respond to α factor. Each cell grows a projection towards the opposite cell and this response of haploid cells to the mating factors of the opposite mating type allows for conjugation between a and α cells, but not between cells of the same mating type. What is the advantage to this type of reproduction?
