In Drosophila melanogaster, short wings are caused by an allele (Xs ) that is X linked and recessive to an allele for normal wings (X+ ). White eyes are caused by an allele (w) that is autosomal and recessive to an allele for gray eyes (w + ). A female fly that is homozygous for normal wings and gray eyes mates with a male fly that has short wings and white eyes. The F1 are intercrossed to produce the F2. What will the phenotypes and proportions of the F2 flies be from the cross?

Chapter 11.1 & 11.2 notes section 11.1 1. every living thing has a set of ? inherited from its parents. 2. after becoming a ? , mendel spent several years studying ? and mathematics at the university of vienna. 3. during sexual reproduction, male and female reproductive cells join, a process known as ? . 4. pea flowers are normally ? , which means that sperm cells in pollen fertilize the egg cells in the ? flowers. 5. when mendel crossed plants with ? characters for the same trait, the resulting offspring had only one of the characters. 6. a ? is a specific characteristic, such as seed color or plant height, that varies from one individual to another. 7. filius and filia are the latin words for ? and ? . 8. the offspring of crosses between parents with different traits are called ? . 9.to mendel's surprise, all of the offspring had the character of only ? of the parents. 10. mendel's first conclusion was that biological inheritance is determined by ? that are ? from one generation to the next. 11. scientist calls the chemical factors that determine traits ? . 12. mendel's second conclusion is the ? . 13. the principle of dominance states that some alleles are ? and others are ? . 14. when mendel allowed the f1 plants to reproduce by self-pollination the traits controlled by ? alleles reappeared in about ? of the f2 plants in each cross.

Ry was studying two populations of the same species of lizards. one population lived on an island and the other lived on the mainland. both populations were affected by a hurricane that hit the island and the mainland with equal force. a year later, henry was testing the gene frequency and saw a decrease in genetic variation in the island species, but not in the mainland species. which best describes a conclusion he might have reached? gene flow greatly affects small populations, but large populations can recover. genetic drift greatly affects small populations, but large populations can recover. gene flow greatly affects large populations, but small populations can recover. genetic drift greatly affects large populations, but small populations can recover.

Refer to this portion of a dichotomous key for fish identification to answer the question. 1. (a) has a single dorsal fin ® 5 (b) has a double dorsal fin ® 2 2. (a) one fin is spiny, the other is smooth ® 3 (b) one fin is not spiny or smooth ® 4 5. (a) has small fin on back near tail ® 6 (b) has no fin on back near tail ® 7 6. (a) has barbs near the mouth ® catfish (b) does not have barbs near the mouth ® 10 7. (a) tail is asymmetrical ® 8 (b) tail is symmetrical ® 9 10. (a) scales are small ® trout (b) scales are large ® whitefish what is the next step to complete to identify a fish that has a single dorsal fin, no fin on the back near the tail, and no barbs near the mouth? step 2 step 5 step 7 step 10
