The digestion of protein starts in the mouth when food is chewed. The saliva present in the mouth comprises two enzymes, that is, lipase and amylase, which dissociate fats and carbohydrates present in the food. After that, the food moves into the stomach, where protein present in the food gets dissociated into smaller amino acid chains by the activity of hydrochloric acid and enzyme proteases. The peptides that join amino acids together are further dissociated by proteases.  

After digestion in the stomach, the left amino acid chains go into the small intestine, where the enzymes released by the pancreas and other enzymes like chymotrypsin, trypsin, and carboxypeptidase acts on the amino acid chains and breaks the chains of amino acids into single amino acids.
