Eutrophication results from the increased amount of fertilizers in local water bodies like ponds or lakes. This actually results in the hypoxia or decreased oxygen content of the water bodies.

Eutrophication is seen in the water bodies that are located beside the agricultural fields. This actually occurs when rain water or water from different sources come into the water bodies. This leads to huge outgrowth of water weeds and this actually decreases oxygen content of water in two ways. Firstly, they consume a lot of oxygen dissolved in water. Secondly they block the sunlight entering inside water, thereby preventing photosynthesis from aquatic plants. Thus, the hypoxia exists in water which kills the aquatic animals like fishes etc. This condition can be prevented by application of several other ways like removing the weeds and purifying the water of the ponds etc. Else this will contaminate the whole environment.
