Phagocytes are white blood cells (leucocytes) that move into tissues that have been invaded with foreign material such as bacteria, for example when the skin is cut and infected. Their name comes from the Greek "phagein" to eat. There are different kinds of phagocytes and their main characteristic is that they resemble amoebas. They have pseudopods or false feet that help them engulf (or "eat") the bacteria which they then envelop in vacuoles where they are destroyed. This process is called phagocytosis.
