This system was created at the time of the Inconfidência Mineira, by French scientists who wanted a system of less arbitrary measures, and that could not be lost. To choose this unit of length, they measured the distance from the Equator to the North Pole. They divided that distance by 10,000,000 and marked that distance on a bar. This unit, they called the metro.
