The cell membrane is a lipoprotein membrane. It is consist of lipids and proteins which are the macromolecules. The lipids forms the phospholipid molecules. This is an amphipathic molecule which has both hydrophobic and hydrophilic head.

There are 2 types of proteins are present in the cell membrane- extrinsic and intrinsic proteins. These proteins act as the carriers for different ions and molecules. They help in transportation of hormones, ions, minerals into and out of the cells.
