It is caused by allergic reaction, infection from bacteria, yeast or virus, injury, skin condition affecting the mouth, irritants like tobacco, hot foods, spices, alcohol consumption, dry mouth, deficiencies and hormonal factors.

Symptoms like the tongue appears smooth and shiny due to loss of the lingual papillae, burning sensation, and difficulty in chewing appear.
