How can wheat grown today produce more bread and cereal than strains of wheat grown in the past?

The answer is; through genetic engineering

This involved introducing foreign genes  of tweaking the wheat’s genome to give favorable traits to the crop to increase yield. This gene may be favorable for traits such as  increased the number of grains per plant or increased the number of stored carbohydrates in the seeds.
