Rules IUPAC naming

Rule 1: Find the longest continuous carbon chain - if two chains of equal length are present, choose one w/ larger number of branch points as the parent

Rule 2: number the carbons starting @ the end nearest the 1st branch

a. if 2 or more different side chains are present, write them in alphabetical order

b. if 2 or more identical side chains are present, use the prefixes di-, tri-. tetra- and so on - don't use these prefixes for alphabetizing -

3. write name as one word

a. use hyphens to separate the various prefixes & commas to separate the numbers
