There are two kinds of diffusion that would cross a membrane. They are simple diffusion and facilitated diffusion.
EXPLANATION:
Simple Diffusion
Simple diffusion is the movement of the particles to an area of lower concentration from an area of higher concentration. For example, if in a closed bathroom there is a bottle of perfume were scattered, the aroma molecules would obviously diffuse from where they left the bottle to all places of the bathroom, and this diffusion would last until there is no concentration gradient left.
Facilitated Diffusion
Facilitated diffusion is a process of diffusion used for materials that cannot overlap the lipid bilayer because of their polarity and/or size. Even though glucose can be more focused outside the cell, it cannot cross the lipid bilayer through simple diffusion since both are large and polar.
To overcome this, a special carrier protein named a glucose transporter will transport glucose molecules into the cell to facilitate inward diffusion. Numerous other solutes have to undertake diffusion which is facilitated to move into the cell, like amino acids, or to get out of the cell, like wastes. Since the facilitated diffusion is a passive procedure, energy outflows by the cell is not needed.
Diffusion differs from simple diffusion in several ways:
•The transport depends on the binding of molecules between the cargo and carrier protein or the membrane-embedded channel.
•The facilitated diffusion rate is saturated concerning the difference in concentration between the two phases; unlike linear free diffusion in the concentration differences.
•The temperature reliance of the facilitated transport is significantly different because of the activated binding event, in contrast to free diffusion where the reliance on temperature is mild.
