Succession in terms of ecology are the oderly changes in the biotic and abiotic factors in the ecosystem.  As, new species arrive it will increase the diversity of species in the ecosystem.  In primitive or early succession these species will compete with the pre-existing species for resources like food, habitat etc. and in the next succession only those species who have survival advantage over others will survive. It will lead to dominance by superior competitors and development of a new successional levels until ecosystem attain uniformity.
