Physical properties of the planets vary in a systematic fashion as a function of distance from the Sun [but note that Pluto is somewhat of an exception to this.

The terrestrial planets, Mars, Earth, Venus, and Mercury all have relatively high densities and low gas content, e.g., they are small and rocky.

The Jovian (or giant planets), Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, are very large and have rather low densities, e.g., they are gaseous. These planets also have large numbers of moons and they all are surrounded by rings. The planets have thick atmospheres and probably no solid surface.
